The Office of Scientific Research and Development

In the past year, President Roosevelt has created many new agencies. One of the best that President Roosevelt created was The Office of Scientific Research and Development. The OSRD “spurred improvements in radar and sonar, new technologies for locating submarines underwater” (Danzer et al. 567). Another achievement of the OSRD was succeeding in ridding body lice from U.S soldiers (Danzer et al. 567). This was done when “the agency ... facilitated the mass production of llin” (Baxter et al. 1). All of these achievements were beneficial; however there was one in particular achievement that was the most significant. This achievement was when the OSRD began development of the atomic bond, a new weapon (Danzer et al. 567). “The idea of forming a research team to create a nuclear weapon was endorsed in a letter than Einstein sent to President Roosevelt” (Manhattan 1). President Roosevelt was quick to respond. President Roosevelt created “an Advisory Committee on Uranium to study the new discovery” (Danzer et al. 567). “In 1941, the committee reported that i would take from three to five years to build an atomic bond” (Danzer et al. 567). All the research needed one simple name to sum up the purpose of the work. The Manhattan Project became the code name for the secret project the U.S government established (Manhattan 1). This was because “much of the early research was performed at Columbia University in Manhattan...” (Danzer et al. 567). The Manhattan Project not only gave us success with the Atomic Bond, but encouraged other countries to experiment with new weapons (Manhattan 1).
